Family Practice Enhancement - "The Coalition has made it clear to government that it believes primary care is NOT in need of major reform. Instead, we believe that we need "Family Practice Enhancement" in order to provide quality, accessible care for our patients. Study after study shows that the care we provide for our patients ranks very high indeed. So why on earth does the Ontario government feel the need to reform it?"  Click here to view the entire bulletin

Our Media Release of October 15, 2002. Click here to view the entire media release.  Here is an excerpt:

"...In addition to examining why the Ontario Family Health Network (OFHN) has failed to convince more than a handful of family physicians to give up fee-for-service and join a family health network, Dr. Mark also revealed for the first time the Coalition’s solution – “family practice enhancement” – for improving the way primary care is delivered in Ontario."

The Living Dead - Victims of MRC Audits Part 2 - The Executive Committee of COFP has recently learned of some disturbing new facts concerning the MRC process.  Click here for the details.

Fall 2002 Political Activity Begins - Representatives of the Coalition of Family Physicians of Ontario (COFP) spent the weekend of October 6th, 2002 lobbying MPPs, party officials and nominated candidates at the Ontario Liberal Convention at the Sheraton Hotel in Toronto.

During our time there, we managed to talk with everyone Liberal MPP in attendance, along with 10-20 nominated candidates about health-care funding, primary care reform, the medical review committee and the OMA Dues Act (Rand). What COFP had to say was well received by party members, and we've been invited to brief their Health Critic, Sandra Pupatello, and key policy people on these important issues later this month.

We were also successful in getting a number of the MPPs and candidates to agree to attend a series of lobby dinners we will be hosting over the next two months.  During our time together, we expect to talk about health-care funding, primary care reform, the medical review committee and the OMA Dues Act (Rand). We also plan on asking them what they've been hearing at the door about health care from their constituents, as well as asking what they think we should do to improve our health-care system.

If you have any questions you'd like us to ask these elected officials on your behalf, please don't hesitate to contact us (at dmark@cofp.com) and we'd be more than happy to accommodate you.

Representatives of COFP will also attend the PC Convention at the end of October, and will be arranging to brief the Leader and Health Critic of the NDP later this fall.

MRC Breakthrough - On behalf of Ontario’s Family Physicians, the COFP has maintained ongoing contact with the Chair of the Medical Review Committee (MRC), Dr. Barnett Giblon, to pursue positive changes to the MRC process. With regards to clarifying the MRC judging process, we are pleased that Dr. Giblon agrees with us that family physicians should be aware of the criteria the MRC uses when performing an audit.  With his permission, the COFP is giving you the scorecard that is used to judge the A003A general assessment code.  Click here for details of this bulletin.

To Ontario Family Physicians To Ontario Family Physicians - Urgent Appeals Part 1 and Part 3 - this is mid 2002 3-part series of urgent appeals to you to enable us to change the status quo and take some strong action to improve the working conditions for family doctors.

The Living Dead - Victims of MRC Audits - For years, the Medical Review Committee of the College and Physicians and Surgeons under mandate of the Health Insurance Act has been auditing physicians.  This bulletin reviews some of the better known and lesser know aspects of the process. Click to view details.

98 PERCENT SAID NO - The results of our province-wide petition sent to all family physicians reveals that the vast majority of family physicians do not approve of the current Family Health Network agreements.  Please click here to read the entire bulletin.

PCR = $96.85 PER PATIENT PER YEAR ...25 CENTS PER DAY!  Our huge 2002 membership drive including the latest news on the new "urban" general FHN template agreements and our petition were sent to an unprecedented every family physician in Ontario.  Click here to see the bulletin and petition or download a "pdf" version.  (Final results were distributed in early April.  See The Medical Post and local newspapers and other media for preliminary results)

Canadians Give a Grade B to the Health Care System - a new Canadian Medical Association finds in its latest National Report card on Health Care (click here for a "pdf" version of the report).  Access to family physicians is the only area that received a grade A; yet, it is the area of health care that is getting the most pressure for major changes.
