Our health care system is changing, but will it get better or worse?

As federal and provincial governments continue to reduce health care spending in spite of a growing and ageing population and advancing medical technology, the quality and accessibility of health care in Ontario and across Canada will suffer.

  • The Canada Health Act - The five principles of the  Canada Health Act (CHA) are the cornerstone of the Canadian health care system. The Act ensures that all residents of Canada have access to medically necessary hospital and physician services based on need, not on ability to pay, by setting the criteria and conditions that provinces and territories must satisfy to qualify for their full cash transfers under the  Canada Health and Social Transfer (CHST).
  • What do Canadians think? (The Medical Post - Sept. 1998)
  • Canadians denied access to new medical technologies - August 6, 1999: Vancouver, BC - Canadians are being deprived of access to vital high-technology medical equipment and procedures says a paper The Availability of Medical Technology in Canada: An International Comparative Study released today by The Fraser Institute.

In terms of technology per capita, Canada is clearly not a world leader. Canada is generally ranked among the bottom third of countries of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in availability of medical technology.

  • Numerous Ontario hospital closures have occurred.  Although the government has backed-down on some of these, hospital bed shortages and over-loaded emergency rooms continue to make headlines.  Will more closures really help our system?
  • An obstetrical care crisis is looming.
  • Across Canada, the number of specialists remains steady; however, the family doctor supply number is falling especially in Ontario.
