Position Statement

I once again ask for your support as I seek re-election in the upcoming OMA District 11 election for the position of Board Director.
Since joining the OMA Board in April 2003, I have been named to the Education and Prevention Committee and the MRC Review Committee (NOT the MRC itself, but an OMA Committee). The MRC Review Committee released a well-received report that should form the basis of long-needed reform to restore fairness to the audit process. I am also on a District 11 advisory committee regarding physician well-being.
I think that these choices help illustrate my concerns about our profession.
We must continue to battle unfair unjust MRC audits until no one fears receiving the letter that you and I know would mean a $105,000 assessment 98 times out of 100.
The Education Committee is truly preventative in nature: the Schedule of Benefits general preamble is being rewritten under its auspices and periodic notices are published to try to educate about billing matters to reduce the chance of an audit.
My involvement with the physician well-being advisory committee has made me appreciate how lucky I am to have (so far) enjoyed good health in spite of the stresses that we all face daily. There is a desperate need to restore pride in our profession; I think the best way to do this is a proper and decent contract so we can provide the care we are capable of, that our patients need, and that the government is morally obligated to fund.
Yes I am a family physician. Yes I have remained active as Vice-President of the Coalition of Family Physicians. And YES I can represent both family doctors and specialists. I can do this because my personal goal is fair treatment for all physicians, especially in the upcoming negotiations. I first became active in medical politics 10 years ago after I listened to a colleague, a specialist, tell me at 1 a.m. , as I waited for my patient to deliver, about what the thresholds were doing to him. He was being penalized for no other reason than he was a physician.
The need for fair treatment is why I got involved in medical politics 10 years ago and why I want to remain involved. Much work remains to be done and I would like to be there on your behalf.
I thank you for your support in the past and ask that you continue to allow me to represent you at the OMA Board.
